Scopes are groups of content that you can use to limit your search. UW-Colleges has 6 scopes:
Most general search. Includes the other four scopes. Searches many databases we subscribe to, but not all.
|Articles||Anything in the Primo Central Index, including articles, ebooks, and some digital objects.|
|UW Colleges Books & Media||Limits to just titles held by UW Colleges Libraries. Note because the title are duplicated you may see holdings from other UW Libraries.|
|UW System Books & Media||Searches all the books and media held by all 14 institutions of the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin State Historical Society.|
|UW Digital Collections||
Includes the holdings of Minds@UW, the Digital Collections at UW Madison and Milwaukee.
Historical Society & UW System Artifacts
|Includes books, newspapers, maps, government publications, manuscripts, photographs, government records, audio and more of the Historical Society's library and archival holdings.|
After you complete an initial search, search@UW allows you to select parameters for your search. From the left column of the search results screen, the "Show only" option allows you to limit your results to resources available at UW Colleges, UW Colleges online resources and peer-reviewed journals.
Further down the column, in "Refine my Results," you can select "Facets" to further limit your results to the information you need. The most popular facets are the options for types of resources and dates. The "topic" option, which suggests keywords similar to your keywords is also popular. Your search results are refined according to each of your selections.
The facets are context driven, so different searches will return different facet limits. For each facet, only the top 5 selections will be displayed. To see all the choices, click on more options and a popup box will display all the options available.
