Terminology

Professional journals are publications used by practioners in order to keep up with knowledge in their fields, to assist them in solving problems they encounter in their work, and to help them plan for future trends.

This may include two types of periodicals:

  1. Scholarly, peer-reviewed journals dedicated to research
  2. Less formal journals that report on research, professional news, and publish first-person accounts of activities and successful projects.

Scholarly and Professional Journals

Teaching Children Mathematics Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education
Teaching Children Mathematics is published by a professional association, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.  The Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education is published by Springer, a scholarly publisher that specializes in science, technology, and medicine.
It provides resources to teachers, including lesson plans, problems, and a thoughtful discussion about the process of teaching math. It publishes research that will be used to improve teaching methods in mathematics and improve the education of mathematics teachers.

Welcome!

Welcome to the guide for students enrolled in Meg Onoda's course, "Geometry for Elementary Teachers."  You will find guidance here on how to find and select articles from professional journals.

Blogs, Twitter Feeds, RSS feeds

Another way to find out what research has been going on in your field is to subscribe to rss feeds, blogs, or twitter feeds.  The idea is that you find out partial citation information from the posting, then pursue the research article.

This requires good search skills.
